The Windmill pub was the heart of community life for residents and visitors of Charlton. The pub site and car park continue to provide a gateway for walks along the Hicca Way, bike rides and horse riding, and its level setting is potentially accessible for all.
The pub was forced to close in 2015, and sold to a private owner by the brewery Charles Wells. The new owner gutted the inside of the building and submitted a retrospective application to change its use, to residential dwelling, in September 2015.
The Save the Windmill campaign helped block the change of use, and over 2000 people gave written support for the Windmill. Combined with community objections, the owner withdrew the change of use planning application in November 2015.
We believe the pub could be a successful free house, serving the community of Charlton and neighbouring Hitchin, and providing gainful employment. The building has been secured for use as a pub for now, but it stands empty, its grounds unkempt, and the risk of redevelopment remains.
The Save the Windmill campaign aims to save the Windmill, and create a thriving pub in the heart of the community. The campaign is run by, and for, people who care about the pub and car park, and want to ensure they are in the right hands. Community support is growing, but we need your help to secure their future.
